What Panchakarma actually involves

The word means “five actions”. Rather than one procedure, it is a structured programme delivered in three broad phases, and a genuine Panchakarma is always staged — skipping the preparation phase is one of the clearest signs of a treatment being sold as a package rather than planned as care.

  • Purva Karma (preparation). The body is prepared through measures such as Deepana, Pachana, Snehana (internal and external oleation) and Swedana (therapeutic sudation).
  • Pradhana Karma (the principal therapy). The selected main procedure is carried out under supervision. Which procedure is appropriate differs from person to person.
  • Paschat Karma (after-care). Recovery, a specific diet, observation and follow-up — the phase most often rushed elsewhere, and the one that determines how well the results hold.

Why the staging matters

A common misunderstanding is that Panchakarma is a single massage or detox session that can be booked by the hour. In classical practice it is a supervised programme, and the preparation and after-care phases are as important as the principal therapy itself.
